The Geek who changed the world’ – Bill Gates, the very influential entrepreneur, founder of the world’s largest software development company Microsoft, tasted success at a very early stage. He has been consistently on the Forbes list of wealthiest people in the world and had maintained the apex position from 1993 to 2007. In 2008, Warren Buffett claimed the top position but in 2009, Gates became the richest person again in the Forbes list. American multinational technology company, Microsoft with a current net worth of about $290 billion had set the highest record of $620 billion in 1999 making him the world’s richest person.

Latest Update: Jeff Bezos is the richest person in the world with a Net worth of $93,3 B, overtaking Bill Gates. Interestingly, this happened a second time in recent months.

Windows Operating System was a path-breaking invention created by Bill Gates in collaboration with Paul Allen, his schoolmate. 90% of the world’s computers are running on Windows  Operating Systems. He had pioneered in operating system way back with a full-blown success.

His Early Life

Bill Gates is very fond of computing and has a knack for programming. Tic-tac-toe was the first BASIC language game written by Gates. In order to spend more time on computer exploring the operating systems and finding out bugs in the computers of CCC (Computer Center Corporation), Bill along with his geek friends bought more time from the company.

After acknowledging the power of software and microprocessors, Gates decided to develop an operating system on his own. IBM luckily gave him a contract of $80000 for developing MS-DOS and Microsoft worked for IBM till 1991. This was a huge success for Microsoft.

Windows 95 brought a revolution in the technology world. It was not just an achievement for Microsoft but also took home computing by the storm. The user-friendly Windows 95 was graphically quite ahead of its time which remarkably increased the number of people using computers in their households.

After the huge success of Windows 95, Microsoft launched Internet Explorer just a week later, which transformed the technological world into an information source for the mass. Amidst all this, Microsoft also had to bear allegations from its competitors when the company set out Windows and Internet Explorer in one package.

The journey of Windows 1 from 1985 to Windows 10 in 2015 has been full of innovations bringing amazement in the technological world and the world got to see the intellect of this laureate who had once dreamt to put Personal Computers in every household. Still, Many users consider Windows XP as the most user-friendly OS for their computers.

Gates that opened a path for unbound knowledge

An erudite leader that he is, Bill Gates delivered his immense knowledge through speeches in world’s best universities like Harvard, Cambridge, Stanford, Oxford, MIT, UC Berkeley and the University of Michigan. His speech at World Economic Forum was considered as one of the most influential speeches of the world.

Bestsellers of New York Times like ‘The Road Ahead’ and ‘Business at the speed of light’ proved that Bill Gates is not just a proficient businessman but an insightful writer as well. He never stopped distributing his knowledge to people and always tried to convey his ideas through articles in world’s best magazines like Times, Wall Street Journal and Economist.

His hard work won him many accolades and Times magazine included his name in the list of ‘100 People who influenced the world’.

Bill Gates with his wife Milinda Gates established William H. Gates Foundation and turned himself towards the work of philanthropy. This foundation is dedicated to supporting health, education, and investments in developing and low-income countries. At the age of 50, Gates gave up his position of CEO to Steve Ballmer- his college friend, in order to diligently and dedicatedly work on his philanthropic ideas. On 4 February 2014, Nadella was announced as the new CEO of Microsoft, following Bill Gates and Steve Ballmer. This step was made for complete handover and better modeling of his company.

The Philanthropist with an Indian connection

Bill Gates, the Microsoft giant didn’t leave any stones unturned with his visits to India between 1997-2005. His insightful talks at Government Leaders Forum – Asia (in New Delhi, 2005) brought a plethora of knowledge to Indian technology industry. Moreover, he also addressed IIT alumni in Cupertino in 2003. Many Indians today, work in Microsoft and current CEO of Microsoft, Satya Nadella is one of the most prominent examples of this fact.

This greater leader who had stepped forward to make the world a better place has already given away billions of dollars hard earned through Microsoft, to his foundation working for world charity. His historic achievements are set to leave a legacy.
